Greenhouse Gas Inventories

Marin's greenhouse gas emissions have dropped 18% since 1990

The statewide goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030. The Climate Action Plans adopted by Marin local governments have GHG reduction targets that meet or exceed the statewide goal.

Our community inventories quantify emissions from these sources:

Built Environment - Electricity

The Built Environment – Electricity sector includes emissions generated by the use of electricity in our homes and commercial and industrial buildings and facilities.

Built Environment - Natural Gas

This sector includes emissions generated by the use of natural gas in residential, commercial and industrial buildings and propane in homes.

Waste

This sector includes emissions generated by the decomposition of solid waste deposited in landfills.

Transportation

The transportation sector includes tailpipe emissions from passenger vehicle trips originating and ending in Marin County, as well as tailpipe emissions generated by medium and heavy-duty vehicles and buses travelling on Marin County roads. Electricity used to power electric vehicles is embedded in electricity consumption reported in the Residential and Commercial sectors.

Off-Road Vehicles + Equipment

This sector includes emissions from vehicles and equipment used for construction, lawn and garden activities, and agriculture.

Water

The water sector inventories emissions generated by the use of electricity in treating, conveying and distributing water from the water source to water users in the community.

Wastewater

This sector includes emissions generated by the treatment of wastewater as well as electricity used by wastewater treatment plants.

What's Missing?

We don’t quantify upstream emissions from the production, manufacture and transportation of food and other products, nor do we include emissions from airplane travel or other activities that residents engage in outside of their communities. Information on consumption-based inventories, which include these types of emissions, is available here.

Marin County Emissions by Sector, 2022

More than half of Marin’s emissions come from the transportation sector, while another third comes from energy used in homes and commercial buildings.
